Initially I had tried to crack this when it was clearly bed time, because I couldn’t even decipher the login for the first part. However after some rest and a couple weeks of being busy, I finally had a chance to sit down and think this through. Even though I am sure lot’s of people have already solved this. [TL;DR: Answers at the bottom]
The Link to the webpage is in the box, but for simplicity here it is >> http://www.lootcrate.com/covertops
The first page shows you a login screen where you must guess (or scramble) the username. The password is already entered so that makes this about 100 times easier, but I think having to decode both the Username and the Password, could have been more challenging and fun. Also could have made it too hard and people would just give up. The Username is actually on the Loot Crate box itself being the blue letters on the keyboard. You also know from looking at the box that the first letter of the username is “N”. If you actually go to the Loot Crate YouTube, you can find a video that shows the username which of course is “Nightwalker“.
After you enter it in and it is correct you will see a bunch of “dos” looking screens doing some magic to appear as if you are accessing the mainframe. Once that is done, there will be a video where an evil villain says some things, and you will click the continue to hack box.
This will bring you to another video where he gives you clues and when you enter the wrong code a message pops up highlighting the word “TIME”. So right away you know the clue is related to time. I started entered numbers that were the same forwards and backwards, such as 12:21, 13:31, 01:10 (without the colons). Nothing worked so I started looking in the Crate and entered the numbers on the little Covert booklet that are pointed to the watch. Still nothing so I just entered random numbers from the booklet and decided to watch the video a couple more times to try and get it. While this was going on I did look at the Watch and even took the rubber part away from the main component. I saw the code on the back of the Watch a few times, but assumed it was just the battery type. This was not the case, but in fact the code! (And the battery type) – CR2016
So here we are yet again at another video (and these videos are really quiet and should have been made with better audio quality) and he rambles on and mentions dates of importance. So I looked through some more stuff and found Birth records in the Orphan Black comic. These were the dates to enter into the two fields you see on the next screen.
04/01/1984 & 04/04/1984
This next clue will drive us MAD he said, but right away I thought of the Mad Libs, so I knew I was probably on the right track. He then mentions the word PENGUIN and how we will never get this one! So looking on the front and the back of the MAD LIBS, you can see that there is a link to the publishing site which is www.penguin.com/youngreaders. So looking inside the Mad Libs for more info, they are based out of New York, which is also the answer.
The next clue was about an agent causing problems, and right away I knew it was the Agent from Marvels: Agents of Shield. I mean it was pretty obvious, so I opened the little booklet and there was his name “Billy Koenig“. Which is the answer and the puzzle to solve.
You will then be presented with a form to put your email (Looter email) and your name to sign up to be a henchman for Gruber McEvil. At this point I am not quite sure what this form is for, but yeah I am going to fill it out! Now we wait and we see if this was pointless or if signing up gets us somewhere…
This video also had kind of a hidden message or something at the end if you paused it when it shows. The message is backwards, but reading it properly reads “Henchmen 7372”. I have no idea what this is for, but if anyone has any thoughts or has done some digging around, let me know!!
TL:DR – Here are the answers in the order you must enter them to get to the end form to sign up as a Gruber McEvil henchman.
- 04/01/1984 & 04/04/1984
- New York
- Billy Koenig
P.S. There is a code on the box which I believe I had read somewhere you can enter on their site, but I am not sure where it would go. Either way if you click any of Gruber McEvil’s YT video the next video that will play on YouTube is of the Rube Goldberg outtakes from their April: Play video they created. And there is also a cheat code for Metal Gear Solid (which is referenced in the Covert booklet)
I think it is kind of cool how they add little trivial things that kind of keep you wanting more and to keep digging deeper!
What are your thoughts?
